So a taser should primarily tase people, but also be complemented by the three basic functions... Now that's a tool I'd buy. :-)

Well, yes, the iPhone should be able to, and I wouldn't mind good VOIP on the iPad.

I should have mentioned that these were functions that should be in addition to their primary use. iPhone's primary is calls, iPad's primary is knocking the three basics out of the park.

I will address the app store in a future post, along with iOS4.

Portable electronics aren't also supposed to make phone calls?

I agree that portable computers are more versatile than desktop computers. When it comes to Macs, I've owned four of the former and none of the latter. I don't understand why anyone would want to be tethered to a desk.

Though some derided the decision at the time, Steve was right when he launched the iMac without a floppy drive. My concern with the iPad isn't the "minimalist" nature of the hardware, but what some have called "curated computing". Do we really want an environment in which only Apple-approved programs can exist? This is a vast departure from the creativity that founded the company.

I love the PADD - thanks for the great link.
That Mac screensaver did become incompatible. I was sad.
The homemade tablets are the ones I was referring to in the above paragraph - they're sitting on my desk right now.

It hadn't occurred to me that the Apple Tablet could be a modern incarnation of the <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/PADD" title="PADD - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki" rel="nofollow">PADD</a>. What a cool connection!

What is the source for your picture of homemade tablets?

Too bad the Mac screen saver you linked to is incompatible with Snow Leopard, as I found out when I upgraded this month. :-(
